I often get asked about how to manage plantar fasciitis. It can be a particularly stubborn condition to treat but several treatments can help to accelerate recovery and reduce symptoms allowing patients to return to sports or daily activites quicker. A kick in the Shins

Shin splints is one of the most common running injuries. It is a particularly difficult condition to treat. Evidence suggests that little intervention except rest from aggravating activites can help,  but in practice patients often report benefit from local treatment, exercises and advice on running technique. I was asked to write an article for the quarterly magazine of the Macclesfield Harriers and Athletics Club ‘Go’. Interesting concept of ‘sticky’ words. What we say can be so influential. Not sure i’d risk the word ‘safe’ though!

NOI Notes

I was in New Zealand on the west coast two years back and a friend took me to see a rugby match between two Maori teams. What a rough match! It made me think “no wonder New Zealand has the best rugby union team in the world”. Anyway, I somehow ended up in the dressing room of one of teams before the match and was called upon to help strap ankles. I hadn’t strapped ankles for some years but the old skills quickly returned. A young shy limping lad came up to me and said “my ankle makes a funny crackling noise, is it OK?” I took a quick look, did some routine ankle stability tests, put some strapping on, “one extra piece for you” I told him, and then said “it’s safe” and “off you go”.
